About Malleswaram Shankar Mutt

Malleswaram in Bangalore has always been the hubub of cultural and religious activities with so many halls like the Chowdiah Hall and the Adarsha Bhavan to name a few, catering to such needs. One such religious institution is the Malleswaram Sringeri Mutt in 6th Main between 11th and 9th Cross Malleswaram, Bangalore. Thanks to the philanthropists who have donated these lands, some with buildings as well.

Way back in the early 80’s this building was donated to Sringeri Shankar Mutt. The then Jagadguru of Sringeri Shankar Mutt, Sri Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahasannidanam asked Veda Brahma Sri Yagnanarayan Shastry to look after the functioning of the Mutt. Many (old and young alike) have indeed greatly benefited from the Vedas, Upanishads and other religious discourses held here under the benevolent guidance of Sri Yagnanarayan Shastry reverently addressed as ‘Guruji’. Sri Guruji attained the Lotus feet of the Lord in the year 2004. From then onwards his son Sri Shivaram Gurugalu (who has Post Graduate degrees in Hindi, Kannada and Sanskrit to his credit) has continued the good work in the same footsteps as his revered father.

The building is now nearly a hundred years old. As change is inevitable this building too will get a make over for a new meditation and Yoga Center together with the religious activities it was conducting before.

May 25th 2007 was a red letter day for the residents of Malleswaram as the present Jagadguru of Sringeri Shankar Mutt Sri Sri Bharathi Theertha Mahasannidhanam graciously agreed to lay the foundation stone for the new structure. His Holiness in his Anugraha Bhashana said that people should engage themselves in Dharmic activities (pertaining to Dharma i.e. righteousness) and that Institutions like this help to a large extent in being a guiding factor to learn and pursue such activities. This is an opportunity for many more in and around Malleswaram to make better use of this Institution (which should be ready in a year’s time) and thereby live up to the expectations of our Jagadguru.

it was indeed a nice surprise to read about ‘our’ sringeri shankar mutt in malleshwaram. why ‘our’, you may ask. yes, it is a very very dear place having its own sanctity for all of us students who had the once-in-a-life-time good opportunity of learning under Sri Yagna Narayana Swami Gurugalu about Advaita, the philosophical school of thought that was expounded by Acharya Sri Shankara. The mutt and the guidance that we received from our Guruji have transformed many a lives and they have helped many mortals find true meaning and purpose in life. When recently the Jagadguru His Holiness Sri Bharathi Theertha Swamiji laid the foundation stone for the new building “Bharathi Theertha Nikethana” to house the “Adi Shankara Sabhangana”, we were thrilled to know that the learning centre and its activities would be expanded multifold. At the same time there was a subdued sorrow of sentiments attached in the hearts of its students that the good old mutt that we all studied would undergo demolition. but as smt. ramadevi has aptly described it as an inevitable change of old giving way to the new, we bow down to the ‘change’, which is the only ‘constant’ in life and look forward to the new structure to complete soon to give us fresh opportunity to quench our thirst for spiritual knowledge.

may the grace of sri sharadambe and sri jagadguru shower upon all to dispel the darkness of ignorance and light the lamp of Jnaana!

Very well written regarding Malleswaram Sringeri Mutt. it does bring back nostalgic memories when we used to enjoy the ‘pradosha prasadam’ sitting on the entrance – steps . The old building generated a very homely feeling .
