Today is Krishna Janmashtami

The days preceding Janmashtami is really difficult for a foodie like me. I see various thindi/ dishes being fried and baked and I can only smell the aroma emanating from them. I am no way allowed to even stand in front of them. It is really tough to control myself from tasting those yummy smelling Chakkuli, Kodubale, Kajjaya, Mucchore, Thengolu, Rave Unde, Laadu, Kobbari Mitaayi, Puri Unde…the list is endless.

To divert myself, I go out for a walk unable to control myself from tasting the thindi being made at home. But that is of no use as I get the Kodubale or Thengolu smell from many other houses. I visit the market place and see banners announcing ‘Gokulashtami thindi Sold Here’. I visit a temple nearby and see stalls have sprung up selling Gokulashtami thindi. So where ever I go during this festival, I’m only tempted more and more to have a go at the thindi before the festival. But I cannot, as they have to be tasted first by lord Krishna, not Ramakrishna.

When I was a kid, the Iyengar Maami opposite our house used to bring a basket full of these (and many more) thindis to my house the day after Janmashtami and pamper me to taste them in front of her asking, “Rave Unde hengidyo? Thengolu ruchi nodo… Kobbari Mitaayi ninge yeshtu ishta, thagolo”. (How is Rave Unde, Taste Thengolu… you love Kobbari Mitaayi so much…taste it too.) I would finish the delicious stuff in a few hours. The lady made these, and many more items that were simply too good to miss. I cannot stop remembering her today. (They shifted recently).

But actually I will not miss her, because my mother-in-law will be pampering me and all the family members and friends with delicious Gokulashtami Thindi today evening.

Happy Janmashtami!
